Nick Verreos Weighs In on the Men's Figure Skating Championship Costumes!

Costume Change...

OK, first of all, Evan Lysacek is KILLING ME! Did he just change his costume AGAIN????? I just can't keep up! Both me--and Vera Wang---must be dizzy! Over the weekend, I just watched the 2010 AT & T US National Figure Skating Championships (I couldn't go--I was too busy doing my Golden Globes stuff kiddies) and I just about coughed up my popcorn and nachos (from my home, not from the actual Arena!). He busted out (did I just say that?) a brand new costume (it's like his FIFTH Costume Change of the Season!) for his Free Skate (or Long Program) where he performed to--yet again, Scheherazade (shouldn't Michelle Kwan have rights to this? Michelle??). Evan wore a gray center-front shirred stretch top with black shoulder beaded accents (Say what?) with black pants featuring side sequined panels (Say what, Part Deux?). I liked it for it's "Where did that come from" aesthetic and give Vera Wang props for her ongoing effort to influencing--stylistically, the world of Figure Skating costumes. Evan placed 2nd and received the Silver Medal. He fell on his quad and had a labored program but still managed to make the Olympic Team.

Johnny Weir, bless his heart--also showcased a brand new costume. It had sequins (naturally) and white feathers (double naturally). Johnny's costumes always teeter on the edge of: Either someone's mother in Siberia made them or was it from a NY/LA-based designer with a $5,000 budget--Nevertheless, Johnny ended up in 3rd place but for me, placed FIRST...--in Feathers and Flash!!

Jeremy Abbott won the Gold Medal, deservedly, but looked more like a Cast Member from "Glee" as opposed to a potential Olympic Medalist. That stretch-silk blue dress shirt was SOOO Show Choir. Sorry Jeremy. I absolutely commend you on the most AMAZING performance (it made my arm hairs stand on end!) but that ensemble of yours was High School and guess what Jeremy, you have GRADUATED!!!!!

Next: The Women!!!! Stay tuned.

Echo Park Fashion: Nick Verreos Attends Haute Olive Bash

Echo Park HAUTE!
Last week--before all the crazy Golden Globe Awards madness---I was invited to my beautiful friend Amara Wilson's Birthday Bash at her chic little Vintage Boutique in Echo Park, Haute Olive.Birthday Kisses: Nick Verreos and Amara Wilson, Haute Olive

So of course, I had to show up--gift in tow (Olive-based beauty products) of course (never come empty handed!). Amara was working a strapless bubblegum pink bustier and the most Olivia Newton-John "Grease" stretch skinny pants I have ever seen. They fit her PERFECTLY, by the way. Lucky her!The party was in full swing once I got there (finding easy parking is not like it used to be in Echo Park!) with all of Amara's and Haute Olive's friends sipping Champagne, doing some shopping and even dancing to the DJ's Retro disco-soul tunes.Party Scene: Amara Wilson's Birthday at Haute Olive, Echo Park

I have known Miss Amara for over 8 years, ever since I picked her at a runway show casting. She had just arrived back from Paris and was on her way to making a name for herself here on the West Coast. Ever since then, she has "stuck with me" for life! Not only did she become my fit model--or as I called her "My House Model/Muse", she opened and/or closed a lot of my shows--including my first Smashbox Los Angeles Fashion Week show back in 2003.Miss Amara was also my "Good Luck Charm". I brought Amara to the LA casting of Season 2 of Project Runway one fateful weekend A LONG TIME AGO! She wore the printed silk "butterfly winged" gown shown above as I stood in front of Tim Gunn to await their decision. Needless to say, I was "In"--Thanks Amara!

Haute Olive Chic: A pouf-sleeve iridescent satin bolero at Haute Olive Boutique

Amara now runs a fabulous little vintage store in Echo Park (Los Angeles), where she collects and sells the best 70's jersey wrap dresses, printed caftans that would make Mrs. Roper blush; as well as Lacroix-worthy cropped bolero jackets. Haute Olive, by the way, also carries Menswear, ranging from Member's Only jackets, Vintage Tees to Western Shirts that both a Silverlake hipster or a Oil Can Harry's line dancin' boy would love.

You're The One That I Want: Birthday Girl Amara Wilson, Haute Olive Boutique

Just when you think that you've been to every vintage store this side of the Mississippi, think again: You must check out Haute Olive! Happy Birthday Miss Amara! And keep working those Olivia Newton-John skinny pants! Love ya!

Golden Globes Fashion Wrap with Carrie Ann Inaba and Nick Verreos

Don't forget to tune in TONIGHT for the Golden Globes Fashion Wrap with Carrie Ann Inaba and her esteemed panel of experts including ME!

It is always a great show and we have the best time doing it. Don't Miss It!

Good Times/Bad Times

GOOD TIMES

1) Myself and Chris are finally starting to get everything pieced together for the wedding in August and we are well within our budget. Although everyone always says “wow, you’re REALLY organised”, we’ve had to be, because most of the guests are coming from places like Ireland and New Zealand so they have to book their flights well in advance. The only things that need to be sorted now are a final decision on the decoration of the venue, bridesmaid’s corsages and men’s buttonholes, a final decision on my hairstyle/makeup and our first dance song – suggestions welcome because I’m struggling to choose one that isn’t super cheesy or clichéd!

2) We are heading to Sirdal, Norway on the first weekend of March with a big group of friends to go skiing…and it’s my first time! Eek! Chris bought me all the skiing gear for Christmas so I am all decked out now. I chose nice shades of varying blue of course…I’m such a girl.ha ha. I am nervous but excited about the whole thing. If anything it will be a great laugh and I will take lots of photos to show you guys…but I may edit out any of me falling on my ass!

3) The snow has finally gone! But shhhh…I better not speak too soon in case it comes back! It’s been a real pain over the past few weeks and I know it’s a shallow complaint but I haven’t been able to wear ANY of my new high heel shoes! It’s hard to find ‘sensible’ shoes to wear with a dress on a night out!

BAD TIMES
1) The January blues. A lot of people seem to go on a real downer in January and it creates a really depressing mood, whether it be lack of money, because Christmas is over or because they are starting a diet/quitting smoking/some other resolution that makes people cranky. I don’t really get the blues in January because I tend not to make resolutions at that time, there’s just too much pressure. I like to mix it up and make resolutions at other times of the year, that way you don’t have people asking you every minute of every day how you are handling it. The way I see it though, life is way too short to walk around feeling down all the time. Yes, everyone has bad times and situations that are tough, but you have to stay positive and remember all the good things in your life that you have to be thankful for. I had a really tough time last week which I won’t go into but I had to just cut the ties I had to all the bad feelings, let them go and get on with being happy. I mean, when you see things like the Haiti Earthquake disaster on TV, it really makes you realise how lucky you are!

2) Being ill - JUST after I had got over my chest infection/Pneumonia, I caught a head cold this week and my head is pounding. I'm sick of being sick!

2010 Golden Globes Red Carpet Fashion: Who Wore What? Sandra Bullock

One of America's favorite "sweethearts", actress Sandra Bullock--who clinched the Golden Globes Best Actress Award for "The Blind Side" wore a violet iridescent organza gown from the Italian brand, Bottega Veneta Spring 2010 line.

It was strapless and rather sheer. For some reason, it just wasn't one of my favorites. The fabric looked a bit cheap and I am sure it was not. Her make up--especially those "cat eyes"--looked fabulous but her hair seemed a bit "moppy"--I sure it was the result of the crazy unusual Los Angeles rain.

With all that, it might not have been the best Red Carpet moment for Sandy, but how can you not love her anyway!

Only ME Style!!

I was talking on the phone w/ my dear friend, Isabel, the other day. She told me that I am the only person she knows that have the "highest tolerant threshold" among her friends.

What does she mean by that?

1. I have 3 young children and never had ONE single nanny's help. (Thanks to my DH and my training skill for men for sharing house chores. hah........)

2. She thinks I never get tired of dressing myself up cause' having 3 kids seems doesn't bother me at all.

3. I mix-n'-match clothes the best........ what she really means is when I get bored w/ summer clothes, I start wearing fall or winter clothes and vice versa.  And it seems I withstand any circumstance of weather condition. ^O^ ha ... ha.... ha.... Thanks to the nice weather in California!!

4. Always so energetically driving up to SF city at least ONCE a week by myself.  I must say, I feel I am suffocated living in the suburban. :P

Then, there I know myself even better!! I am a control-eccentric. I don't trust people when I can do things on my own .... (are you like me too?!!) haha.....

Weekend is always family time as I said before.

Why shop at Vintage store when you know you have clothes which you had long forgotten about!! ( I know, when you spend too much and vintage shop might be the best bargain for designer clothes.)

So, are you ready for the spring/summer 2010?
  • anything w/ military green?
  • something w/ floral accent?
  • possibility of alternating old jean skirt, shirt.....?
  • trench coat?
  • cropped pants?
  • stripes or gingham shirt or skirt?
  • white shirt, white shirt dress, white ruffle blouse or skirt?
  • .........
  • A super fit body!!?
Ok, if you are not ready just yet, let tomorrow be the first day to start!! :)

You can tell where we were today!! ... Borders bookstore!

I piled up my vintage black beads necklace w/ BR bought ivory necklace.... my own statement piece!!

My ODJ.

1. Top:
  • cream dress w/ layered skirt which I said it might be a copycat.
  • Helmut lang leather cropped jacket
2. Accessory:
  • Y3 wool hat
  • two tones croc embossed leather belt
  • Lanvin leopard happy sac 08'
  • beaded necklaces
  • Chanel two tones 09' hosiery
  • 09' fall Proenza Schouler platform cap toe pump

Ah, there Ilona is doing her funny style again.
hum..... ragga w/ monkey moves!! hahahahah......

NOW, are you ready for Valentine?!!!! :)

Have a great Monday!!

2010 Golden Globes Red Carpet fashion: Who Wore What? Diane Kruger

Actress Diane Kruger wore a violet pink ombre silk organza gown from bankrupt couturier Christian Lacroix. It is from his Spring 2009 Haute Couture Collection, worth an estimated $45,000. I think she looks chic and very Parisienne, n'est pas?

I'm so excited that someone, either at the now-defunct Lacroix press office--or a well-researched stylist--realized how wonderful it would be to bring some of Lacroix's Couture out and onto the red carpet--as opposed to keeping them in vaults.

2010 Golden Globes Red Carpet Fashion: Who Wore What? Chloe Sevigny

Another favorite of mine was HBO's "Big Love" actress Chloe Sevigny. Chloe is a definite fashionista who takes risks with her red carpet fashion, usually opting for a REAL Vintage Yves Saint Laurent---not one from 2003, thank you very much.

For the 67Th Golden Globe Awards, she wore a Valentino Ready To Wear Spring 2010 design by Alessandra Facchinetti's replacements, Maria Grazia Chiauri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. It was light mauve-nude colored silk gown featuring cascading ruffles from the side to the back. Stunning and very Fashion--with a Capital "F" from the front as well as from the back. Yet still very feminine and elegant. When she walked up on stage, the volants (ruffles) just glided, along with her. C'est Magnifique Chloe!

2010 Golden Globe Awards: Who Wore What? Marion Cotillard

French Actress Marion Cotillard is the new face of Christian Dior. So, in other words, there's no chance you will see her in a designer/brand other than Dior--at least for MAJAH red carpet events. It's in her MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR contract to wear nothing else kiddies.

For the 2010 Golden Globe Awards, Marion wore a deep hunter-green silk one-shoulder gown with a high side-slit featuring a peek-a-boo lace underslip from Christian Dior Spring 2010 by John Galliano. Nothing really changed that much from Runway to the Red Carpet as you can see above, except for the length of that slip...

2010 Golden Globe Awards: Who Wore What? Drew Barrymore

One of my favorites of the night, Drew Barrymore, wore a Versace Atelier (the Haute Couture leg of the Versace Empire) Fall 2009 gown--about 2 years old and probably worth about $50,000. It is made of silk chiffon side-draped over an entire under-corsetted inner-gown and with unusual shoulder and high-hip crystal detailing.

I know that this will be a polarizing gown for many but I LOVED IT!!!!!! I am all for actresses wearing high fashion, especially "experimeantal" ones that might make the more conservative dresser squeal with disdain, Who cares I say! As long as the wearer owns it and the gown works for them. I think it does. Her flawless make-up and hair are the perfect "cherry" on this Versace Atelier "cake". Go Miss Drew! Ti Amo!
