Los AngelesTimes: Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" Exhibit Mention!

LA Times Love!

Academy Award-Nominated Costume Designers Colleen Atwood ("Alice In Wonderland"), Mary Zophres ("True Grit") and Nick Verreos, FIDM "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" Exhibition photo courtesy of Alex J. Berliner/ABImages

Yesterday--on my Birthday no less!!! I opened up my Los Angeles Times--the BIG Sunday Edition--and there was a FABULOUS article--written by Ellen Oliver--about the opening of the 19Th Annual "Art of Motion Picture Costume Design" Exhibition at my Alma Mater (and College I am an Instructor and Spokesperson at) the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM.

And the best part (well, not the best part but it was nice!): It included a wonderful photo of myself, and the Academy Award Nominated Costume Designers, Colleen Atwood (for "Alice In Wonderland"), and Mary Zophres ("True Grit") as well as a short & sweet quote. It was a bit of a shock and (nice) surprise to be having my coffee and scrambled eggs---and then all of a sudden see the photo! Thanks LA Times and by the way, it begs repeating: Wonderful article!

Below is the Los Angeles Times Sunday Edition Article, published yesterday:

Scene & Heard: Costume designers in the spotlight

At the preview of "The Art of Motion Picture Costume Design," two-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood said
Johnny Depp wanted his Mad Hatter costume to capture the flavor of a mood ring. So she layered his topcoat with multiple colors of silk.

Standing beside his costume from "Alice in Wonderland," Atwood said the challenges of designing for Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter included the changing sizes of the characters. "Alice shrinks and grows, and Helena's big head made her neck look as thick as a thigh," Atwood said, adding that she solved that problem by creating a collar to narrow the appearance of Bonham Carter's neck.

An estimated 1,400 guests, mainly members of the Costume Designers Guild, turned up on Feb. 5 to view more than 100 costumes from 21 films at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising's museum (www.fidmmuseum.org) in Los Angeles. Four of the five nominees for this year's Academy Award for costume design were represented: "Alice in Wonderland," "True Grit," "The Tempest" and "The King's Speech." (The fifth film is "I Am Love.")

"In the best pictures, the costumes are subtle," said Nick Verreos, an FIDM instructor and "Project Runway" personality. "The goal of costume design is to create real people, but when it's a fantastic movie like 'Alice,' the costumes have to be fantastic."

Valentines & a Long-Wear Lip Product

Hello my lovelies...I hope you all have a lovely, romantic Valentine's night planned.  Unfortunately I will be spending mine alone because my hubby is working offshore until Wednesday (awwwww...*get the violins out*...poor me!).  I kinda feel like Valentines Day has become way too commercial and all about who gets the best/biggest bunch of flowers.  I also don't like the way single people are made to feel so I say make Valentines Day whatever YOU want it to be.  If you and your friends are single...go out or stay in and have a girly night.  If you can't be with your partner, then today just serves as a reminder of how much you love them.

I did tell Chris not to get me anything since I don't need flowers or a card on a specific day of the year to know that he loves me (he did put a ring on it afterall!).  BUT I came home today to find a vase of flowers that had been delivered and left outside my front door....

That's typical of Chris though, he's a big softie at heart and he likes me to know I'm appreciated.  At least we can go out for a romantic meal when he gets back on Wednesday.  The weather offshore hasn't been great so there's talk of flights being delayed.  I have my fingers crossed that he doesn't have to stay longer than planned!

I also wanted to mention a product that really impressed me at the weekend.  I was heading out for a meal with two of my best friends so I wanted to make sure my lipstick stayed put throughout the munching.  I had tried a couple of long-wear lip colours in the past but they always seemed to dry my lips out.  This time, I decided to give Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lip Duo in Perfect Peach a go...

On the Estee Lauder website, they claim it "wears up to 12 hours—lasts comfortably through meals, drinks, busy days.  Luscious shades won’t kiss off, rub off or fade out.  Apply base shade for long-wearing colour. Wait approximately 2 minutes for colour to set.  Apply glossy topcoat for moisture and shine. Additional topcoat can be applied whenever you want extra shine".

First off, I love the peach shade.  It looked more pink in the tube but when it is applied, the peach colour shows through more as you can see in the following pics...

Just to ensure a smooth application and good finish, I used a wet muslin cloth to exfoliate my lips lightly whilst in the shower.  This just gets rid of any flaky areas on your lips and ensures a smooth base for the long-wear lip colour.  I also applied my Korres Lip Butter while I did my makeup to make sure my lips were well moisturised.  The Double Wear Lip Duo REALLY impressed me with it's lasting power.  It was still very much present after a three course meal and 2 wine spritzers.  When it did come off, that was only because I removed it with my cleanser.  The colour is beautiful because it has a real brightening effect on my complexion and it's a nice way to wear colour without it being too 'in your face'.  I really want to try the Coral shade now!

Finally, since quite a few of you had been asking after the infamous Wolverine, here's a pic of who he will be spending Valentine's night with...

It'll never work out but I don't have the heart to tell him!

53rd Annual Grammy Awards: Who Wore What? Rihanna in Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011

Rihanna in Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011, 53rd Annual Grammy Awards Red Carpet

Well Jean Paul Gaultier's PR team was working OVERTIME! They nabbed not just one big star on the 2011 Grammy Awards Red Carpet (Nicole Kidman, see posting below)--but TWO--with Rihanna! Both gowns from the same Haute Couture Spring 2011 "Punk Can Can" Collection. Rihanna just loves the whole intermittent transparency thing on dresses. And this gown has it. Placed between the transparent panels are also gradating layers of tulle gathered ruffles. It's a bit of a mess for me. I'm just not sure if it works. It just looks like someone might have taken the Christmas Tree garlands and used them to make a dress. But...her hair and make up look GORGEOUS!!! Just like Nicole, she was wise to go a softer more delicately pretty route.

Is it a 'Yea" or Nay" on Rihanna's Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011 Gown? I would love to know what you guys think? Be sure to let me know!

53rd Annual Grammy Awards: Who Wore What? Nicole Kidman in Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011

Nicole Kidman in Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011

Nicole Kidman walked the 2011 Grammy Awards Red Carpet--hubby Keith Urban in tow--wearing a Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2011 strapless tulle and embroidered applique gown. This gown was from Gaultier's just-debuted Couture Collection which was inspired by "Punk Can Can". It's Gaultier, he's allowed to be "inspired" by ANYTHING, kids! But the funny thing is: I get it on the runway (it's a $50,000+ Couture Hand-made Gown after all!!) but somehow on Nicole Kidman, on the Red Carpet--and next to Keith--she looks a little "Country Music Singer Performing at the Grand Ole Opry". Her hair looks GORGEOUS though; soft and very pretty, love the color. I also liked her softened make-up as well.
What do you guys think? Do we Like "Country Music Nicole"?
