San Diego's 2010 Best Dressed Awards and Dressed to the Nth Degree Fashion Show Canceled and Postponed Due to Sad Death of Julien Hug

Just hours ago, I received notice that this weekend's 2010 San Diego's Best Dressed Awards and Fashion Forward Runway Show "Dressed to the Nth Degree" Gala, produced by Leonard Simpson, was canceled due to the very sad passing of Julien Hug, the son of Denise and Bertrand Hug, the Honorary Chairs of the event.

The Gala was to take place this Saturday evening at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina and was to benefit San Diego's Ronald McDonald House. I was invited to be a "Special Guest Designer" at this event from the generous sponsorship of my Alma Mater, the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM, showing an exclusive preview of my NIKOLAKI 2011 Spring Collection

Julien Hug was a Contestant on ABC's "The Bachelorette" and was on his way to Palm Desert to open the family's newest restaurant Augusta Modern (the family owns two of San Diego's top restaurants Bertrand at Mr. A's and Mille Fleurs), when his body was found. we mourn his passing and respect the family's wishes for peace.

Give a Real Gift this Christmas

With the days getting colder and the evenings darker we are all starting to get into the Christmas mood. I have already started planning gifts for my friends and family, so when an e-mail about Christmas presents of a different kind dropped into my inbox today I felt compelled to post about it.
The International Rescue Committee is offering gifts that your dearest will love while making a real difference to the lives of refugees forced to flee from war or disaster. At the IRC store, you can purchase critical items for those in need in honor of your loved ones. The IRC will even send recipients a beautiful personalized card in your name.

They offer a great selection of gifts ranging in price from $18 to $5,000.

For $20 you can provide a child with a backpack of school supplies, which will aid the poorest children in continuing their education.
While for $52 you can provide a year of school. In Afghanistan, girls’ education has traditionally been undervalued and restricted – during the Taliban era it was outlawed entirely. Yet educating girls expands economic opportunities for themselves and their families. Your gift can provide hope and promise to an Afghan girl.
For expecting mothers who must give birth in the wake of crisis, there may be few medical resources to adequately support them. Your gift can provide essential items such as blankets and clothing to ensure a safe birth for a child born in a crisis zone for just $24.
If you wish you can also make a single donation, or set up a regular donation. This organisation really does strive to help people and reassuringly 90% of their income is spent directly on helping those in need (4% is spent on fundraising and 6% on management and general admin). Please do have a look at this website whether you are in the US or the UK. I think a donation makes a wonderful Christmas present and would feel honoured if someone made a donation in my name.

If you have particular recommendations for similar charities please leave them in the comments below. Thank you my lovelies! xxx

My Birthday(s)

Last Thursday I turned 24! I always get very excited about my Birthday.. so like the Queen I usually have two, or even three ;). As the day itself was midweek I decided to have a little get together at home to celebrate on the weekend and then go to a restaurant on Thursday for a romantic dinner with the bf.

On Sunday we had a 'come dine with me' themed dinner party master-chefed by my lovely bf. As the champagne was flowing I didn't manage to take many pictures, but here are a few of my makeup for the night.
I used crystal avalanche eyeshadow from MAC for the lid and blended a little scene in the crease. I then added reflects teal glitter to go with my blue dress. The lashes are from eyelashesdirect, and are one of my absolute favourites :).
Unfortunately this is the only photo I have where you can see my dress (Zara). Please excuse my claw hand... I have no idea what I was trying to do here lol.
The bf really outdid himself with my Hummingbird bakery red velvet cake. I absolutely love red velvet cupcakes so this was the most indulgent treat. I had a piece every day for a week and we still couldn't finish it lol ;).

On Thursday I had a bday lunch with the girlies, and even though I was at work I decided to glam up a little bit.
In the evening I kept my makeup the same, but added lashes (from lash royalty) and a smokey eye with MAC's twinks eyeshadow.
For dinner I chose a 'slinky' dress from French Connection with patent KG booties since we were ging to cobbly Covent Garden.
We had a lovely meal at Cafe des Amis, which I highly recommend and will definitely be returning to.

Teeeheee. Thank you all for the lovely Birthday messages!! Only 359 days to go till the next one... :( xxx

Glamour & Marie Claire Magazines

I popped out this morning for an oh-so-glamourous trip to the store round the corner to pick up some toilet paper...yes my life is made up of glitter and gold.ha ha.  Anyway, I always take a fleeting glance at the magazine shelves to see if anything catches me eye and today I noticed Glamour Magazine and Marie Claire had freebies attached.  Now...9 times out of 10, I'm not one for magazine freebies because if it's makeup, it's never the right shade for me, if it's a piece of clothing, it's always a size XS and if it's jewellery, it's always flimsy and a bit cheap looking.  I mean, what do we expect when we are getting it for free?

However, today I noticed a rather pretty baby pink Nails Inc varnish attached to the front of Glamour which I read on a regular basis anyway so I thought...why the hell not!  The polish is called Warwick Avenue and it's a perfect everyday shade for me because I prefer the nude, glossy shades for that more natural look.  I know, I know...I REALLY need to branch out when it comes to nail polish but I promise I will be embarking on an experimental phase very soon!  I also saw a rich red/burgundy shade as well so if that's your bag, then go check it out.

Happy clutching my issue of Glamour, I then noticed the new issue of Marie Claire...how pretty is Rihanna's makeup on the cover...sigh! I love the contrast of girly pinks with her vivid red hair.  With this issue, there was a thin double bangle with charms up for grabs but I bought the magazine more for it's contents.

The bangle itself is pretty flimsy if I'm being completely honest and you can see where it has been fused together.  It is from http://www.made.uk.com/, so I decided to take a gander at the site to see what the company was all about as it seemed to be a good cause.  I know from experience that when they give away jewellery as a freebie for a magazine, it's seldom made to the same standard as the pieces you buy from the company (this probably has something to do with them having to mass produce them to a ridiculous scale to give away in the publication).

The MADE site states "We're about producing gorgeously unique, high quality designer accessories for style-savvy shoppers. But in doing this we're able to radically improve the lives of impoverished communities in developing countries.  All made products are designed by influential designers, then sourced and created within disadvantaged communities across East Africa.  Following the principles of fair trade we train local artisans in new skills, providing fair wages and support at every level. Via this 'trade not aid' ethos we believe we can help break the cycle of poverty and empower the people who create our products".

On taking a look at the other jewellery, I spotted some really unique, interesting stuff and there were a few pieces that really stood out for me, the first being this statement necklace...

I could totally see this necklace worn with a hot pink silk blouse, skinny jeans and a black blazer!  It would really finish off an outfit and I love that it has a raw feeling to it.  The next thing that caught my eye was this gorgeous bracelet...

I will definitely be taking a closer look at this website because I'm all for supporting companies that help people in impoverished areas of the world, not only to make a living for themselves and their families, but teaching them new skills and trades.

Now I'm going to kick back, relax and read my mags...ahh bliss!
