Nick Verreos to Host "In Search of The Next Oscar" Design Competition: Islands of The World Fashion Week Bahamas 2010!

Caribbean Red Carpet Couture Hosting!!
Junkanoo Nick: Nick Verreos in The Bahamas, Islands of The World Fashion Week 2008 Welcoming Night Party

I am beyond excited to announce that I will be flying to The Bahamas TOMORROW!!! No, not to ride the dolphins, or slide on the Atlantis's Leap of Faith but to be part of...

The Island Of The World Fashion Week 2010 fashion shows and festivities. In addition, I have also been invited to host a fabulous Fashion Design Competition "In Search of The Next Oscar". Not as in the Academy Awards Oscar, but as in Oscar de la Renta, the Dominican Republic-born fashion designer. This competition will recognize and honor the island-based designer whose collection reflects a cohesive meeting point between ready-to-wear and Haute Couture.

Take A Bow: NIKOLAKI designers Nick Verreos and David Paul with models, Islands of The World Fashion Week 2008

As many of you may know, I was privileged enough--along with my NIKOLAKI design partner David Paul--to go to the Bahamas two years ago to show our NIKOLAKI Collection at the Islands of The World Fashion Week 2008.

Showing our gorgeous gowns and dresses at the Islands of The World Fashion Week was an amazing one-of-a-kind experience which needless to say garnered TONS of press for us, including many top US and international publications.

The elegant venue, the stunning models--everything was up to par with any top Fashion Week around the World. In short, The Bahamas does it right when it comes to showcasing the best of Fashion from the World's Islands!!!

This year's IOTW Fashion Week will run November 11-13th with fashion shows EVERY NIGHT at the elegant British Colonial Hilton. Highlights include Special Celebrity Designer Jay McCarroll--yes, Winner of Season One Project Runway--who will be showing his collection on Opening Night; the Search For The Next Oscar design competition on November 12Th and ending with the Haiti Relief Fashion Show on November 13Th.

Nick Verreos Figure Skating Fashion Blog UniversalSports.com: Grand Prix Cup of China

Go Figure China!!!
My New Love: Chinese Pairs Sui Wenjing and Cong Han

The Grand Prix of Figure Skating continues and this past weekend, we were (not I but the figure skaters!) in China for, yes, the Cup of China. The skating was of course, amazing but naturally, I'm here to discuss the lovely--and sometimes not-so-lovely costumes, for my Figure Skating Blog for UniversalSports.com.

One thing I need to get off my designer chest: After watching this past weekend, I am now in LOVE with the Chinese Pairs couple of Sui Wenjing and Cong Han. She's about 4' 7" tall and like EIGHT!!! (OK, I lie, she's 15, but still!) and they were the World Junior Champions last year and now are debuting in the Senior Grand Prix circuit. And did I mention I LOVE them! They were unbelievable. Those two are ones to watch! If they are that good now, huneyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!! But I digress, let's get to my Figure Skating Costumes "Two Cents":

Chen Peitong Short Program

Mud and Yellow Fish Creature: I assume that Chinese Men's Figure Skater Chen Peitong's yellow and brown costume had something to do with the "Yellow River Concerto" soundtrack he skated to--that doesn't mean it worked! It was as if some already not-so-pretty fish got stuck in mud in that aforementioned Yellow River and out came this hybrid of a creature worthy of a bad Japanese Monster Movie. Icky Poo.

Faiella and Scali Short Dance

My Fair Skating:
From the minute Italian Ice Dancers Faiella and Scali stepped onto the ice, their costumes had "My Fair Lady" written all over it, but in a subtle not overdone way. His: A dapper gentleman's 3-piece suit evoking tailored elegance and hers, an ivory with black-and-white striped dress was an exquisite representation of Audrey Hepburn's iconic costume from the movie. A perfect example of how costumes don't have to SCREAM to have a powerful effect and yet, can still put an exclamation mark on a sublime ice dance performance.

Pechalat Bourzat Short Dance

I Need a Shot of Vodka: “Dr Zhivago” never looked so intense, chic and oh-so-passionate. These outfits perfectly represent how costumes can enhance a performance when Ice Dancers get it right! The intensity of the fire red color juxtaposed against the jet black beading was a perfect contrast and evoked the style of the Early 1900’s. Her asymmetrical chiffon skirt was a great choice adding fluttery movement and drama to the overall look.

Miki Ando Free Skate

Figure Skating Red Carpet: I absolutely loved Miki Ando’s Free Skate Costume in which she skated to Piano Concerto in A Minor by E. Grieg. Miki usually goes for black-colored costumes so this wasn’t a surprise. What I admired was the demure elegance of the front combined with the captivating sexiness of the plunging low back. The beading was delicate yet expressive and she is even accessorized: Notice the “built-in” diamante necklace! A ten in my Figure Skating Costume Book!

And now we go from Miki Ando's "Figure Skating Red Carpet Chic" to Alena Leonova's Costume above...

A Very Versatile Palette By Dior!

I love eyeshadow palettes because they are a great space saving option when you are travelling or jet off on holiday.  Saying that, there's always one or two shades in a palette that you never touch because they're either too bright, too dark or just don't suit you in general.  So those unwanted shades are left untouched in the palette and take up the space that could be occupied by something more appealing.  This 5 Colour Iridescent Eyeshadow palette from Dior has become the exception for me...

It was definitely love at first sight when I set eyes on this gorgeous palette of pearly neutrals called Earth Reflections (no.609).  I have NEVER come across such a brilliant combination of shades that I just know I could use every day, either for a light, girly look or a more defined smokey look.  On first impressions, the packaging is slick and sophisticated...exactly what we have all come to expect from Dior.  It comes with the usual velvet pouch to keep it cosy and safe...

The palette contains 5 shades - a champagne beige, a light taupe, a dark taupe, an ivory and a pale pink in the centre.  All of the eyeshadows are beautifully smooth, silky and almost creamy in texture with great pigmentation.  They only need minimal blending and have a lovely ethereal effect on the eyes.  The Dior website describes them as having a "unique Wet Reflect™ technology" which "saturates a whole new generation of powders with pearlescent particles, for never-before-seen brilliance. With its gliding feel and even, ultra-luminous finish, the silky, almost creamy texture blends perfectly into the eyelid".  I think that describes this product perfectly.

I absolutely adore each shade and the HUGE advantage of taking this palette on your travels is the three palest shades can double up as incredible highlighters - ivory or pink for paler skins, the goldy champagne one for medium to dark skin tones.  You can even mix those three shades with clear gloss to create really pretty lip colours!  By dabbing them in the centre of your lips, it creates a fuller appearance.  This is without doubt my favourite eyeshadow palette I own because it's so versatile and wearable on ANY skin tone.

What is your favourite eyeshadow palette in your collection?
